Southwestern International Raceway

Tucson, AZ

Sept. 14, 15, 2007

Southwestern International Raceway hosted the Super Associations racers on Sept. 14th and 15th.  The event was the 4th and 5th points races for the Indicom Electronic Arizona Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Super Quick (8.50 Index) Associations and a Box / No Box Gambler to round out the racing action.  On Friday the $100 award from Airaid for the Best Package went to Brian Goodwin with a .21 package.  The #1 qualifier was Don Toia who ran a 9.150 on the 9.15 Index with a .005 light.  Mike Proctor took his rear engine dragster into the final to face the 1963 split window Corvette sponsored by Borderland Construction of Eddie Wilson.  Eddie gave the win and the big check to Proctor when he left .006 too early and turned on the red light.

Super Gas hosted cars from all over Arizona to run the 10.18 Index.  Rick Annis from Queen Creek, AZ got the win in his beautiful bright red ’68 Dodge Dart.  Rick’s hole shot victory was his first in Super Gas this season.  Rick had a .029 light and ran a 10.219 at 140.81 MPH on the 10.18 Index.  The Super Street final was also decided at the starting line.  The rear end in Rodney Ward’s ’64 Chevy truck broke splitting the case and gave Scott Sturm’s ’64 Nova the victory.  Scott still ran an 11.226 at 115.36 on the 11.21 Index after his .039 light.  The Super Quick final was decided .12 of a second when Chuck Hawk Jr. dialed a 7.55 and ran a 7.552 at 176.93 with a .10 reaction time.  Scott Stauth was the runner-up when he dialed a 7.77 and ran a 7.792 at 174.30 MPH with almost the same light at .11.

In the Box final, Mike Gardner drove his ’67 Falcon into victory lane over Rodney Ward’s ’64 Chevy pick-up.  Rodney went red at the tree by .014 while Mike had a .018 green.  Gardner dialed an 11.20 and ran an 11.197 at 116.86 on the free time run.  The No Box final had Aaron McCammond’s El Camino up against the current High School Points leader, Matt Hawk.  Matt took the double break-out win when he dialed a 12.37 and ran a 12.332 at 104.40 with a great .036 light.  Aaron went further under his 10.65 dial wit a 10.612 run at 125.61 MPH.

Saturday’s race schedule was the same as Friday’s with the addition of our R1320 race.  Carl Mapes took his ’71 Camaro to victory for the second time this year over Jamal Brewer’s 2004 Dodge SRT in the R1320’s fourth event for 2007.  Carl dialed a 14.00 and ran a 14.048 at 95.19 MPH with a .393 reaction time.  Jamal had a better reaction time of .176, but was off his 14.10 dial with a run of 14.459 at 100.17 MPH.

In the Indicom Electric Arizona Super Comp Race # 5, the Airaid Filters Best Package $100 Award went to Keith Funk  Keith was also the number qualifier and won the set of spark plugs from Allan Fillebrown Racing.  The Race #4 runner-up found himself in the final again for Race #5.  A broken rocker arm made Eddie Wilson and his ’63 split window Corvette unable to make the call for the final and put him in the #2 spot again.  Blake Williams took the win also trying to get the $75 check for the perfect 9.15 run.  Blake was one, one thousandths off just like Mike Procter was on Friday night with a 9.149 at 166.52 MPH.

When Rick Annis towed his red ’68 Dodge Dart through the gate on Friday, he had not won a Super Gas race in over a year.  Now he has two wins in as many days.  Rick again had a hole shot win, this time on Joe Freeman and his Ford roadster with a .035 to Joe’s .135 reaction.  Rick ran almost the same number as he did Friday with an 11.211 at 132.73 MPH.  Joe tried to catch Rick but went under the Index with a 10.169 at 132.31 MPH.

Another double-up winner was Scott Sturm in Super Street.  Scott left three thousandths at the tree, but ran closer to the 11.21 Index with an 11.241 at 117.36 MPH.  Mike Gardner had a better .023 light, but ran an 11.287 at 116.59 MPH for the number two spot.

SIR management placed a $50 bounty on Friday night’s Super Quick winner Chuck Hawk on Saturday.  Chuck kept the money all the way into the semi finals when he handed it over to Scott Stauth.  In the final round Scott went red by .002 to give Chandler chassis builder Tom Yancer the victory.  Tom dialed a 7.42 and ran a close 7.428 at 178.61 MPH after his .025 reaction time.

The Box category went to first time winner Chelsea Clark when Dennis Schrage turned on the red light.  Chelsea’s rear engine dragster dialed an 8.59 and ran an 8.607 at 155.24 after his .044 reaction time.  Dennis ran the Camaro out with a 10.398 ET on his 10.35 dial at 131.99 MPH even after his .011 red light.

James (Chuck) Sorenson, Jr. had a single into victory lane in the No Box category.  Tom Hagle’s Vega could not make the call so Jim got his first victory in his newly built ’81 Pontiac.  Jim saved equipment and only broke the beams and put the car in the trailer

The next race at SIR is our Sport Compact / Street Legal night on Friday, Sept. 21st.  We will have our Team #12 and Jr Dragsters on Saturday, Sept 22nd.  Gates on Friday are at 7 PM and on Saturday gates are at 3 PM.
